Members of the Association of Defense Attachés accredited to Armenia visit the National Defense Research University

NDRU 02

On October 22, the members of the Association of Defense Attachés of Foreign Countries paid a cognitive visit to the National Defense Research University, MOD, RA.

At the University Conference Hall, LtG Hayk Kotanjian (R), NDRU Founding Head, Doctor of Political Science, Professor, introduced the NDRU activity, its structure and some details on the NDRU research and educational components to the defense attachés.

He noted that the NDRU, MOD, RA, was opened on January 28, 2016. The University was founded on the basis of the Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS, MOD, RA), which was established back in 2005 and had functioned since then on. The project for the NDRU establishment was elaborated in Armenia in 2003-2004, and reviewed during General Kotanjian’s academic fellowship at the US NDU.

Professor Kotanjian stated that the objective pursued by the University was to increase the level of efficiency of Armenina’s security-defense system via bridging the research and educational activities. The following are among the tasks of the University: researches conducted on regional security dynamics, cybersecurity, information and communication technologies, as well as those in the direction of management of cyber resources. Relevant analyses and recommendations are submitted to the political-military leadership of Armenia contributing to the adoption of the academic-based strategic decisions and expansion of their knowledge in the field of security policy.

During its activity the NDRU has set up close academic and educational ties with the world advanced centers in the field of security studies, to name a few, the US National Defense University and Harvard National Security Program, American Foreign Policy Council, the Russian Academy of State Service under the President of Russian Federation, and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, MFA, RF, the Russian Political Science Association,  CSTO Academic-Expert Council, Jean Moulin Lyon University 3, the British Chatham House, Israeli Institute of Eastern Europe and CIS, the Jerusalem Univerity, Kadir Has University in Istanbul and other institutions.

In his speech Professor Kotanjian also mentioned that the education in the University was provided via the model of advanced Western research universities and institutes, with the account of the experience of Russian think tanks, i.e., transferring the products of the academic-applied research as knowledge to the auditorium.

At the meeting they dwelt also upon the NDRU’s research work in the realm of cybersecurity and ICT, namely, the NDRU-elaborated projects of the National Cybersecurity Strategy and that of adapting and implementing in Armenia the Chief Information Officer (CIO) system.

In particular they also presented NDRU’s academic-applied publications, and the international conferences organized by the University, as a platform for academic dialogue for the key regional actors.
